One stick of organic Palo Santo wood, approximately 10cm (4 inch) long. Palo Santo is a naturally fragrant wood from the dry tropical forests of South America. As a natural product, each stick varies slightly in size, colour and grain.

Palo Santo, meaning “holy wood” in Spanish, has been burned for generations across South America to cleanse and clear spaces before ceremony, meditation and prayer. Today it is widely used to create a calm, grounded atmosphere at home, with a sweet, woody aroma and hints of citrus.

Palo Santo comes from the Bursera graveolens tree, a relative of frankincense and myrrh that grows in Peru and Ecuador. Responsibly sourced Palo Santo is collected from branches and trees that have fallen naturally and been left to rest on the forest floor for several years, which is when the wood develops its distinctive fragrance.

Store your Palo Santo in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, ideally in a paper bag or sealed container. Kept this way, the wood holds its natural aroma for a long time. If the scent starts to fade, lightly scuff the surface of the stick to release fresh oils.

Hold the stick at a 45° angle and light the tip for 30 to 60 seconds. Let it burn for a moment, then gently blow out the flame so the wood smoulders. Move the smoke around your space, then rest the stick in a heat-proof dish until it goes out on its own. Burn in a well-ventilated room, never leave it unattended, and keep it away from children and pets.
